Why You Should Not Raise a Pet If You Cannot Care for It ?

A Humanitarian and Islamic Perspective on an Unbreakable Responsibility

Pet Ownership: A Commitment Not to Be Taken Lightly

In an era where raising pets has become trendy and widespread on social media, many forget that animals are living beings.
They have feelings and needs, not just cute content or entertainment.
Owning a pet means a daily commitment to provide food, water, medical care, and emotional attention.

If You Cannot Care for It, It’s Better Not to Start

Poverty is no shame.
But deciding to raise a pet without the ability to provide minimum care is a form of injustice.
Leaving an animal hungry, sick without treatment, or confined in an unsafe place is a moral failing.
In such cases, it’s kinder and more respectful to leave the animal in its natural environment or avoid keeping one altogether.

What Does Islam Say About This?

Islam is a religion of mercy, not just towards humans but towards all creatures.
The Quran and Hadiths emphasize good treatment of animals.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There is a reward for every living being.”
[Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim]

He also told the story of a woman who entered Hell for imprisoning a cat and neither feeding it nor letting it eat from the earth.
Conversely, a man entered Paradise because he gave water to a thirsty dog.

Islam’s balance is mercy, justice, and responsibility.

The Prophet (ﷺ : peace be upon him) Mohammed’s Example with Animals

The Prophet (ﷺ: peace be upon him) was not only mercy for people but exemplified kindness towards animals.
He forbade beating animals without cause, overloading them, or torturing them.
He encouraged gentleness and taught:
“He who is not merciful to others will not be shown mercy.”

Final Words

If you cannot raise a pet properly, it’s better to abstain.
This is an act of mercy, awareness, and responsibility.
Pet ownership is not a social status symbol but a covenant before God and oneself.
Do not take a soul under your care and then leave it to suffer in silence.
