Pet Ownership: A Commitment That Must Be Taken Seriously
In today’s world, where pet ownership has become a social media trend, many people forget that animals are not decorations or sources of entertainment. They are living beings with feelings, instincts, and needs. Owning a pet is not about sharing cute photos online — it is a daily responsibility that requires food, clean water, proper shelter, medical care, and compassion.
If You Cannot Care for It, It’s Better Not to Start
Poverty is not a fault, nor is it shameful. However, choosing to raise an animal without the ability to care for it properly becomes an act of injustice. Leaving a pet hungry, sick, or neglected — even unintentionally — is a form of cruelty. In such cases, it is far kinder and more humane to avoid adopting a pet or allow the animal to remain in its natural environment rather than letting it suffer under your care.
The Islamic View on Animal Welfare
Islam is a religion built on mercy — not only toward humans but toward all living creatures. Both the Quran and the Hadith emphasize kindness, fairness, and good treatment of animals. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“There is a reward for kindness to every living being.”
(Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
He also warned against cruelty, recounting the story of a woman punished for imprisoning a cat without feeding it or allowing it to eat, and the story of a man forgiven and granted Paradise because he gave water to a thirsty dog. Islam teaches that true faith is reflected through mercy, responsibility, and justice toward all forms of life.
The Prophet Muhammad’s Example of Compassion
The Prophet ﷺ was not only a guide for humanity but also a model of gentleness toward animals. He prohibited beating, overworking, or harming them, and he praised empathy and kindness. He said:
“He who is not merciful to others will not be shown mercy.”
His teachings demonstrate that true mercy is universal — it extends to humans, animals, and the environment alike.
If you cannot provide a pet with the proper care it deserves, choosing not to adopt is an act of mercy — not neglect. This decision reflects awareness, humility, and responsibility. Pet ownership is not a social trend or an image to maintain; it is a sacred trust before God and a moral obligation to your own conscience. Never take a living soul under your care only to let it suffer in silence.
